TRENTON (AP) — Bail will remain at $1 million for a Trenton man accused of fatally shooting an off-duty New Jersey corrections officer at a city banquet hall late last year.

Twenty-six-year-old Maurice Skillman faces murder charges in the death of Carl Batie, a 27-year-old Willingboro resident who served in Mercer County.

Skillman’s lawyer sought a bail reduction Tuesday, claiming there may be witnesses to the shooting who could exonerate his client. But prosecutors objected to the request, citing what they said was strong evidence linking Skillman to the shooting.
Batie was one of several people standing on a second-story rear deck at the hall when shots rang out on Nov. 11.
Prosecutors say Batie was an innocent bystander and not the shooter’s intended victim.
No other injuries were reported in the shooting.
