Gunshot victim found in burning car identified as Chevin Burgess

Officials have identified the gunshot victim found in a burning car earlier this month as 22-year-old Chevin Burgess.

Around 7:15 p.m. on Jan. 4, police were dispatched to the 100 block of Hart Avenue to investigate a burning car. And after firefighters extinguished the blaze, sources say, they found a body inside the vehicle.

Around the time officers were dispatched to Hart Avenue, police scanners reported there were gunshots just before and shortly after the fire began. Then, three days later, a medical examiner determined the victim’s manner of death to be a homicide, and the cause of death to be a gunshot wound.

On Tuesday, Mercer County prosecutors said the body has been positively identified as Trenton resident Chevin B. Burgess. He was identified through dental records, officials say.

The Mercer County Homicide Task Force continues to investigate Burgess’ death. Anyone with information is asked to call (609) 989-6406 or use the Trenton police confidential tip line at (609) 989-3663.
