With more than two dozen arrests and nine convictions on his record, William Marshall was a career criminal. But despite his shortcomings, he was beloved by his ex-girlfriend’s family. They had known him since he was a teenager, even had a nickname for him — Dollar — and tried to help him overcome his past demons.
He betrayed that trust on Nov. 16, 2012, when Marshall, distraught over the disintegration of his relationship with Ruschell Fireall, used his vehicle to run his former lover off the road and then shot her multiple times with a 9 mm handgun on Pennington Avenue in front of her family.
Marshall, 46, will likely spend the rest of his life in prison after he was sentenced Tuesday to 30 years in prison for the murder. Read more
A Beverly man who “terrorized” Trenton during a murderous four-month crime spree that claimed two men’s lives was “stalking” one of his victims when he climbed aboard a city train the morning of Oct. 29, prosecutors said.
Randy Washington, 33, who has addresses in Trenton and Beverly and is being held on $2.1 million bail, has been charged separately in the July 30 shooting death of George Jamison , 43, and the Oct. 29 slaying of Silas Johnson, 64. He is also facing charges in five robberies that occurred in the city – two in July and three in October, prosecutors said — but bond was not set on those charges when Washington appeared before at an initial hearing before Superior Court Judge Robert Billmeier.
Prosecutors said Washington was apparently hell-bent on avenging his sister’s alleged rape when he sought out Johnson on a train. Prosecutors couldn’t shed light on why Washington knew Johnson would be on the train.

Kevin Smith stands near a makeshift memorial he built for Rodney Burke. Nov. 9, 2014 (Penny Ray - Trentonian)
Rodney Burke lived in housing provided by Greater Trenton Behavioral Healthcare and he was moved to South Broad Street about a month before he was murdered.
Burke, 48, used to live on Hamilton Avenue, where store owners and a small community of street hustlers did their best to protect him from harm. But when he moved to South Broad Street, Burke was no longer protected by people who understood his mental state. That left Burke vulnerable to gang members, drug dealers and other street hustlers who saw an opportunity to take advantage of him, according to family and friends.
Burke was shot and killed on Nov. 4. He was found inside his home, but police believe he was shot elsewhere. Prosecutors have charged Kenneth Hines and Alexandria Gomez with murder and conspiracy in connection with Burke’s death. Prosecutors say the pair conspired to commit a robbery, which resulted in the killing.
Sadly, that wasn’t the first time Burke had been robbed. Family and friends say he was repeatedly beaten and robbed for at least the past three years. Read more
